Artist Statement

Neil Sternberg

As a realist painter my main focus and inspiration is rooted in the environment in which I live—the rural landscapes and the people who inhabit them. I am inspired by timeless subject matter that omits any signs of current trends or artifice.

I`m searching for the emptiness that lives in the soul of the north— the simple things in an environment that reveal almost human attributes. A desolate train station can be the stage or the scaffolding to hang themes of spirituality, alienation and repression.

In my figurative work I’m seeking the same objective of conveying an underlying mood beneath the subject and not merely painting what’s in front of me. It has always been a challenge to me to find ways to paint an impression of solitude, introspection and silence.
